Michael Joe Shawhan of Petersburg passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family on Friday, December 1. He was born to George and Mabel (Henke) Shawhan on August 30, 1942. He was a graduate of Petersburg High School and Henderson Kentucky Barber School.
Mike attended Petersburg Baptist Church where he dearly loved his church family and activities. Mike loved the Lord.
Mike started his work career as a barber, then continued as a coal miner for Amax and Old Ben. He later began working for the Department of Natural Resources as Resource soil agent, where he retired. Mike began doing taxidermy as a hobby and was well known all over for his talent and passion for deer mounts. He had a love for farming, fishing, hunting and gardening, both vegetables and flowers. Mike was very proud of his flowers, always willing to show them off to visitors and offer tips on his beautiful creations.
Mike loved his family and always enjoyed when they could all be together for the holidays. He loved sharing his stories and life experiences with his grandchildren. He always tried to throw in a life lesson when he was with them, as well as, teaching them his passion for the outdoors.
He loved writing little mementos of his experiences in nature. He so loved the outdoors and animals of all kinds.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Mabel Shawhan, a sister Flo Phillips and a brother David Shawhan.
Mike leaves his wife, Marsha (Cook) of 40 years, his children Douglas (Bobbie) Shawhan, Sara (Tony) Dillon, and Jennifer (Andrew) Houchins. He also leaves his grandchildren Samantha and Adam Baumgart, Darby Shawhan, Morgan, Kenadie and Harper Houchins, and a sister in law Beverly (Les) Sturgeon.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, December 8, with visitation from 4-8 pm on December 7 at Harris Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Walnut Hills Cemetery in Petersburg. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with his care.
