Mary Carter Obituary

 Mary Jane Carter, 84 passed away peacefully on November 17th 2023 at Linda E White Hospice House at Deaconess in Evansville. She was born July 17th 1939 in Alford, Indiana to Carlin and Flossie (Arnold) Preston. She Married Jerry Carter on October 4, 1958.

        Mary was a lifelong resident of Pike County, she attended her early school years at the Alford School and was a 1957 graduate of Petersburg High School. She started her work career as a secretary at Malotte Machinery in Petersburg and later at Petersburg Associates during the construction at the IPL power plant. She was Court Reporter for the Pike County Small Claims Court and later worked at Pamida in Petersburg. 

         She was a lifelong member of the Petersburg Free Methodist Church. She was very proud of her family and enjoyed planning holidays. Mary and Jerry enjoyed participating in car shows and often came home with trophies. She collected figurines and glassware and enjoyed decorating her home and taking care of her landscaping. She also liked crocheting blankets for her family.

She is survived by Jerry, her husband of 65 years. She is also survived by her son Kevin (Sherril) Carter of Haubstadt, daughter Angela (Jeff) Harting of Petersburg and son Jeff (Angie) Carter of Petersburg. She is also survived by granddaughters, Andrea (Jason) Gravens and Stephanie (Justin) Rumble, grandson Braxton (Natalie) Harting, granddaughter, Carly (Ryan) McCain and grandsons, Steven (Rachelle) Neyhouse and Aaron (Elizabeth) Neyhouse. She is also survived by eleven Great-Grandchildren Bailey Gravens, Mason Gravens, Allysa Rumble, Drew Rumble, Carter McCain, Caleb McCain, Crosby McCain, Miles Harting, Lucas Harting, Madelyn Neyhouse and Wyatt Neyhouse. She is also survived by her sister Esther Bright of Gallion, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Ruth Snyder and Carolyn Henson and brothers-in-law Fred Malotte, Bob Snyder, James Bright and Elza Henson Jr. 

Services for Mary will take place at 2 PM EST on Monday, November 20, at the Petersburg Free Methodist Church in Petersburg, IN with visitation from 10 AM until service time. Pastor Don Fausnaugh will be officiating and burial will follow at Walnut Hills Cemetery in Petersburg.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Petersburg Free Methodist Church or the Linda E White Hospice House. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
