Glen Alen Malott

March 30, 1950-December 25, 2019

Alen Malott, 69 of Lansdowne PA, passed away on December 25th at his home. He was born to Frank P and Marjorie (Harne) Malott in Pike County, In. His parents were later killed by a tornado that tore through the town in 1990.

Alen graduated in 1968 from Petersburg High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Indiana State University in Evansville

In 1975, he moved to Lexington, KY. He attended the University of Kentucky. He received a Masters of Art in 1977. He went on to become a professor of Photography at the University. He was a photographer for The Cats Pause, a weekly sports publication.

In 1986, alen was hired at The Philadelphia Inquirer. Many co-workers have said he was the best photo editor that the have ever worked with. He won three awards from NPPA for the Best Use of Photos Suburban Editions. Photography was not just a career, but a big part of his life. His job was eliminated two years ago.

In 1984, he started as a professor within the Department of Kinesiology at Temple University. As a Master Diver he was responsible for teaching beginner and advanced scuba diving. Also employed as a safety diver at Dutch Springs in Bethlehem, PA. other affiliations include The American Heart Association, The American Red Cross, Divers Alert Network and National Association of Underwater Instructors. Recreationally, his dives include The Atlantic Ocean, The Caribbean, quarries all over Philadelphia and Canada. He documented his trips thru hundreds of thousands of photos along the way many of which included shipwrecks.

Other journalism photography employments include The Sun Commercial Times, Owensboro Messenger Inquire, Canwood of Kentucky and The Evansville Sunday Courier and Press.

Capturing history through a lens was very important to him and he encouraged family and friends to do the same.

Survivors include, two sisters Annetta Nelson and Kay (Alan) Benjamin of Petersburg, In; a nephew, Greg Benjamin of Clearwater, Fl; a niece, Jody (JD) Cummings of Petersburg, In; two great nephews Caleb (Sarah) Benjamin of Clearwater, FL, Gage Cummings of Petersburg, In; a great niece Alivia Cummings of Petersburg, In and a great-great nephew Bodhi Benjamin of Clearwater, Fl. A brother, Donald along with his parents preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Petersburg High School Alumni Scholarship. These could be mailed to PCCF at PO Box 587 Petersburg, IN 47567 or The Edith Barrett Memorial History Center at PO Box 216 Petersburg, IN 47567.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. EST at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg, Indiana. Burial will follow at Walnut Hills Cemetery in Petersburg. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST on Friday, January 10 at Harris Funeral Home.
