Charlie Sims Obituary

Charlie N. Sims, 81, of Newburgh, IN, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

Charlie was born October 21, 1938 in Pike County, IN to Lyndon and Pansy (Harmon) Sims.

Charlie was a graduate of Winslow High School. He attended Vincennes University and graduated from Oakland City College; he earned his Masters of Education at Indiana State University. He played basketball at both Vincennes and Oakland City. Upon graduation he taught at Hymera, IN for two years before beginning at Loogootee in 1962. He taught at Loogootee for 34 years, until he retired in 1996. While at Loogootee he was the Freshman and assistant varsity basketball coach for two years, and most notably, the men’s track and cross country coach for 30 years. During his coaching tenure, he took 5 track teams to the state meet across 3 different decades, and in the mid 70’s he bested 50 other cross country teams to advance to the regionals. Upon retirement, he enjoyed golfing and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Beverly (Brown) Sims; one son, Brian Sims of Riverside CA; one daughter, Jodi Webb (Nick), of Carmel, IN; two step-daughters, Lorie (Brown) Bancroft (Don) of Warrenton, MO and Cherish (Brown) Slifer (Matt) of Newburgh, IN; eight grandchildren Katie and Carlton Webb; Jacie, Jocilyn and Jadan Manion; Ian (Anessa), Chase and Ashton Roeder; two great-granddaughters Layla Manion and Freyja Roeder; one mother in-law Patricia Thomas; one brother Gregg Sims (Alice) and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 36 years and mother of his children, Rosalie (Sorgius); one sister Linda Lou Curtis (Charles).

A public gravesite burial service will be held on Monday, June 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Iva Cemetery (also known as Pride Cemetery), Co Rd 650 N, Otwell, IN 47564.  Those wishing to attend may meet at the cemetery or at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to follow in the funeral procession.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Charles Sims Scholarship Fund at www.gofundme.com, or checks can be mailed to Jodi Webb, 10595 Breckenridge Dr, Carmel, IN 46033.  All donations will be used to fund a 1-time continuing education scholarship for a Loogootee Track & Field or Cross Country athlete.
