Mr. Prentice Sherman Stafford died peacefully at Amber Manor on Friday, December 15, 2023, in Petersburg, Indiana at the age of 87. Prent is survived by his older brother, Lavon D Stafford (born 11/04/29) of Louisville, Kentucky, younger sister, Anne Heffington (born 11/21/39) of Harrisburg, Illinois, younger brother, Jerry Joe Berry (born 10/16/43) of Princeton, Indiana, and adopted son, Doan Stafford (born 05/20/68) of Los Angeles, California. He is preceded in death by: his mother, Della June Stafford (06/02/1907 - 10/16/1943), of Monroe City, IN, older sister, Virginia Ruth Hazelman (11/14/1931 - 11/17/1991), of Vincennes, IN, his father, Horace Dorsey Stafford (02/27/1905 - 12/09/1992), of Monroe City, IN, older sister, Dorotha J. Like (04/27/1925 - 10/15/2012), of Monroe City, IN, and his stepmother, Evelyn Lucille Stafford (05/23/1923 - 07/31/2021), of Monroe City, IN. Prent was born on March 24, 1936, in Monroe City, IN. After he graduated from high school in 1954, he immediately joined the United States Marine Corps, and proudly served for 2 years with an honorable discharge in 1956, which paid for his Embalmers Apprenticeship, allowing him to graduate from the College of Mortuary Science, after which he worked for the Harris Funeral Home for about 9 years. Then in 1966, Prent accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Defense embalming bodies in Vietnam to send back to the United States. There is where he adopted his son. Moving every 4-5 years, he lived and worked in such varied places as Japan, Germany, northern California, the Philippines, and back to Japan before he retired after 27 years in 1993. Back in Petersburg, IN, he was elected to serve 2 terms as Pike County Surveyor, 2004-2011, where he replaced many missing property line markers.
No funeral or reception is scheduled. The family would like to thank the staff at Amber Manor and AseraCare Hospice for all of their care and attention.
