Maxine Russell

Maxine Russell, 99, of Otwell, passed away Monday, August 17, 2026.

Born January 2, 1927, in Otwell, she was the daughter of Noble and Thelma Traylor. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Noel Russell; a daughter, Patricia Avon; a grandson, Jamie Avon and three brothers James (Jimmy), Donald and O’Neal Traylor.

Survivors include her daughter, Darlene Russell a son-in-law, Joe Avon; two sisters, Kay Grey and Carol Strange; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Shook, Scott Avon (Suzanne), Benjamin Shook, Andrew Shook (Cindy), Kristin Avon Mazza (Damiano) Amy Shook Canini (Brian), and Stephen Avon (Alyssia Clark); and 13 great-grandchildren, Alexander Talbott, Nicolas Shook, Lucas Shook, Kayla Canini, Johnathan Shook, Maddalena Mazza, Cora Avon, Isabella Canini, Patrick Avon, Theo Mazza, Mila Avon, Kai Avon, and Miles Canini.

Maxine was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life centered around the family she held so dear. As the strong matriarch of her family, she led with resilience, quiet dignity, and unwavering love. She treasured family traditions and will be remembered for the steady, caring grace, enduring strength, and joy she brought to generations of her loved ones.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m., with burial in Traylor Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Traylor Union Church in Otwell, Indiana. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
