Listen to Obituary

George Glen “Tuffy” Wiscaver, 86, of Otwell, Indiana, passed away on July 14, 2026, at Daviess Community Hospital in Washington, Indiana.

George was born on May 23, 1940, to Glen “Penny” Wiscaver and Ruth Mabel Wiscaver, both of whom preceded him in death. As a young boy, he moved with his family from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Velpen, Indiana. Following his marriage, he made his home in Otwell, where he lived for nearly seven decades and became a familiar face in the community he proudly called home.

Affectionately known throughout his life as “Tuffy,” George carried a nickname lovingly given to him by his father. Glen “Penny” Wiscaver had a special tradition of giving each of his children a unique nickname—a family tradition remembered with great affection and one that became part of the Wiscaver family heritage.

George was known above all as a hardworking man. Whether operating the family’s livestock and grain farm, performing custom butchering, or working in area wood industries, he believed in earning an honest living through determination and perseverance. He spent the majority of his career at Jasper Chair Company in Jasper, Indiana, where he eventually retired. Even after retiring from farming and custom butchering nearly thirty years ago, he continued to care deeply about the farmland he owned, which remains in agricultural production today.

Perhaps George’s greatest legacy was not found in the work he accomplished, but in the values he instilled in his children. He taught them that hard work matters, that a person’s word should be trusted, and that integrity is measured by faithfulness to one’s responsibilities. Those lessons became a lasting inheritance carried forward by each succeeding generation.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret Sue Wiscaver (Stone), whom he married in November 1979. Together they shared nearly forty-seven years of marriage.

He is also survived by their children, Eric Wiscaver and Kelly Wiscaver, both of Otwell, Indiana.

George is further survived by the children from his marriage to Thelma Ann (Barrett) Barnes, the mother of seven of his children: Dale (Kim) Wiscaver of Ocala, Florida; Timothy (Pam) Wiscaver of Shoals, Indiana; Carl Wiscaver of Loogootee, Indiana; Ricky Joe (Brenda) Wiscaver of Washington, Indiana; Jacqueline Combs of Loogootee, Indiana; and MaLinda (Joe) Smith of Champaign, Illinois. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was stillborn and preceded him in death, as did Thelma Ann Barnes.

He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Lou Wilson, Mildred “Pill” Sumner, and Nora Jean “Bug” Harrison; his brother, Eddie “Housefly” (Janet) Wiscaver; and his stillborn daughter, Elizabeth.

He is survived by his brother, Donald “Partner” (Mary) Wiscaver of Montgomery, Indiana.

During the final five years of his life, George made his home at Prairie Village Nursing and Rehabilitation in Washington, Indiana. There he became affectionately known as “Georgie,” a name spoken warmly by residents and staff alike. His family will always be grateful for the genuine compassion, friendship, dignity, and exceptional care shown to him by the caregivers who enriched his final years.

The family also extends its heartfelt appreciation to the physicians, nurses, and staff of Daviess Community Hospital for the kindness, comfort, and compassionate care they provided during George’s final days.

The family would also like to express special appreciation to Kativa Myers for preserving and sharing the Wiscaver family history, particularly the cherished stories surrounding the family’s unique nicknames and heritage.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 20, 2026, at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg, Indiana, from 12 PM EST until 1 PM EST. Funeral services will immediately follow with Gary Arnold officiating. Burial will take place at Otwell Cemetery in Otwell, Indiana.

George’s life was not defined by public recognition or worldly achievement, but by faithfulness to the ordinary responsibilities of life. He loved his family, worked hard, honored his commitments, and left behind an example that will continue to influence those who knew him. His memory will remain a lasting blessing to all who called him husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend.
