Frederick “Tubb” Mitchell, 87, of Petersburg, passed away on October 24, 2026 at Deaconess Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Indiana. He was born February 7, 1939 to Robert “Jack” Mitchell and Charlotte (Stewart) Mitchell. He grew up on the Line Road and had many friends. Most of them had nicknames and called themselves the “Line Road Gang”.
Tubb attended Petersburg High School through 11th grade. He enlisted into the Army in 1955 where he earned his GED. His military career lasted from 1955 till 1964. Early on, he was stationed in Germany during the same time as Elvis Presley and then later in Fort Knox, Kentucky. While in Fort Knox, he was a Staff Sergeant and a Senior Tank Commander. He married his wife Linda Mitchell on October 13, 1960 and enjoyed 59 years of marriage.
After the military, Tubb worked for the Old Ben Coal Company and was a UMWA coal miner for close to 40 years. He was a proud member of the UMWA local 4343. He worked in many different areas of the mine, from bulldozer operator to running the draglines “Big Red”, “Divot” and “Gentle Ben”. Tubb was the Chairman for the Mine Committee, Union Organizer and the District 11 Representer. He was a great arbitrator and fought for the rights of the union miners. He was always helping both the miners and their widows to make sure they received their pensions and health benefits.
He was also a member of the Pike County Council from 1995 to 2002 and served as the President in 1995 to 1996. He enjoyed serving Pike County and helping out the community.
In his free time, Tubb enjoyed camping, NFL football games, and going to the Indianapolis 500. After retiring he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, mowing his yard, watching cowboy shows on TV, and hanging out with his coal mining buddies and reminiscing about the good old days.
Tubb is survived by his daughter, Libby Mitchell; son, Joe Mitchell; granddaughter, Kristal (Amber) Mitchell; great granddaughters, Addison McDaniel, Key’ona Wing, Geneva Wing, Roslyn Johnson; cousins; in-laws; and nieces and nephews.
