Douglas Rhea Jones passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, at the Linda White Hospice House, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Born in Evansville, Indiana, on February 8, 1946, Doug was a man of remarkable intellect, dedication, and deep devotion to his family and work.
Doug graduated from North High School in Evansville, IN, in 1964 and began a long, distinguished career in power generation. He gained early experience working at Babcock & Wilcox, the Warrick County Power Plant, and SIGECO (Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Co.). In 1968, he joined Hoosier Energy at the Ratts Generating Station in Petersburg, Indiana, where his employee number was 11. His career at Hoosier Energy spanned over 40 years, holding many positions, finishing in his retirement as Operations Manager in 2008, though he returned in 2015 for an additional year to lend his expertise. Doug held the unique distinction of being at Hoosier Energy on the very first day the Ratts station started operation, as well as the final day it produced electricity.
Doug successfully ran his own small business, installing and repairing heating and air conditioning units, plumbing, and doing a bit of everything. Doug could fix absolutely anything electrical. He was an early adopter of technology, proudly purchasing his first Tandy 2500 computer in 1991, he spent decades upgrading and fixing computers.
Outside of work, Doug liked being out on the water boating and jet skiing, particularly at Patoka Lake. He was an avid traveler who cherished trips to visit his family and looked forward to spending time in Las Vegas. Above all, Doug was dedicated to his late wife, Vickie. He took great joy in helping her build crafts and sell flowers together; they were deeply faithful in placing flowers on the graves of loved ones who had passed before them.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Vickie (Brock) Jones; daughter, Tracy Jones; parents, Alva Rhea and Mary Jane (Barfield) Jones; brother, Billy Jones; and twin sisters, Connie Brown and Bonnie VanDunk.
He leaves behind a proud legacy and is survived by his three sons: Scott (Tami) Jones of Hooper, UT; Dean (Lori) Jones of Petersburg, IN; and Todd (Michelle) Jones of Munford, TN; seven grandchildren, Travis Jones and Kalie (Trek) McDowell of Roy, UT; Brock Hamm of Petersburg, IN; Tim Jones of Newburgh, IN; and Abby, Makayla, and Andrew Jones of Munford, TN; and two great-grandchildren, Averi Hamm of Odon, IN, and Emerson Jones of Evansville, IN.
Services for Doug will take place at 4 PM EST on Saturday, July 18, at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg, IN with visitation from 2 PM EST until service time. In accordance with Doug's wishes for cremation a private burial will take place at a later date. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
