Arthur Miley Obituary

Arthur “Art” Leland Miley died on December 28, 2018 in La Jolla, CA from natural causes.

Art was born November 29, 1931, south of Petersburg, Indiana, in a rural farm house that was built by his great-grandfather in 1870.

He attended a one-room rural grade school in Pike County and graduated from Petersburg High School in 1950, and 20 years later was later elected to the Petersburg High School Hall of Fame. He was grateful that his Pike County, Indiana, roots run six generations deep.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Indiana University in 1954 and in 1956 married Barbara (Babs) Tolbert of Vincennes. Their life-long devotion to each other was always evident as they encouraged and supported each other to excel in their callings.

His 48 year active business career took him and his family to several states including the New York City area where he had been recruited as a Division Vice President with PepsiCo Inc. In 1971 Art was elected the President of the Planning Executives Institute, a national professional business planning organization of 3,000 business planning executives.

A few years after moving to San Diego, California, in 1969, he acquired a Christian publishing company and was well known in the Christian publishing community. Following his retirement from the publishing business, he often mentored first-time authors by assisting them in writing and publishing their books. He maintained an interest in and wrote some books on Petersburg High School and Pike County history.

He is survived by Barbara “Babs”, his wife of 62 years, and four children: Sam of Nashville TN, Sarah Miley Williams of Cincinnati, OH, Dan of San Diego, CA and Brett of Lemont, IL, and seven grandchildren: Kate Miley of Nashville, TN, Elizabeth and John Arthur Williams of Cincinnati, OH, Erin and Rachel Miley of San Diego, CA, and Jack and Emma Miley of Lemont, IL, a nephew Steve Brenton of Wadesville, and niece Marcee Brenton Griffin of Evansville.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur Miley Sr. and Ruth Robinson Miley McClellan of Petersburg, an infant son, Scott Miley, and a sister, Lila Miley Brenton.

His passion was serving the church and was actively involved in several organizations rooted in Christian ministry. He was baptized at the age of 14 in a coal mine lake with the Brenton Chapel Church near Cato, IN. He was a long-time active and ardent member of the Mt Soledad Presbyterian Church in La Jolla, California.

A viewing will held be at the Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg on Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 10 AM to 11 AM immediately followed by the funeral service at Harris Funeral Home.

Following the funeral service, interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Vincennes. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
